The remainder of the week.

Thursday, December 2, we will rehearse from 3:45-4:45.
• Friday, December 3, students need to come to my room at 8 AM to load. We will leave school at 9AM., rehearse at 10AM, eat lunch at noon and go to the mall. We will return to Shallowater about 5PM.
• Saturday, December 4, students need to eat a protein breakfast. I need for students to e at the high school by 10AM. We will leave the high school (door back at the loading dock) at 11AM. We will have pizza brought to our holding room. I will buy water. The directors’ meeting is at 1PM, and Denae McLellan and Lisa Cagle will stay in the room with the kids. We go on at 2PM. The rest of the plays are on the hour, so our kids should be cleaned up and ready for the second play. All students need to wear dress clothes after our performance. Boys, slacks if possible and collared shirts; girls, slacks or dresses. No T shirts. Girls may wear dressy dresses with spaghetti straps as long as they are in good taste. They do not need to be short as they are standing on a stage to receive medals. Remember (to students) you are representing Shallowater, Shallowater Middle School, and our theatre department. There are four plays – three in addition to ours. The last play should be over with by 6. I look for critiques to be no later than 8. All students must attend the critiques. We will go to a restaurant following critiques. Parents are invited to dine at the restaurant as well. Hope we are celebrating. Let me know if you want to join us, and I will make arrangements. I will let you know where we are eating asap.

Thursday, Public Performance, November 18

Thursday, November 18, 2010, Public Performance
• So proud of you! You finally improved as a cast from the last performance. Keep this up. Sorry the critiques were late. We had a high school rehearsal after your performance.
• At the VERY beginning before the curtain opens, the side light showed the silhouette on the wall near the steps (audience's right) of a person back stage moving around. Crew people – be careful that your shadow is not seen.
• Macy, begin talking with the music underscoring your words – about 5 seconds before the music ends. Mac is doing well on the music, that I believe we will be able to hear you over the music.
• Seanachais – slower on handing the Bard’s rod to each other. In history, the Bard’s rod signified who would be talking, who would be the focus. We can’t do that, but remember when a person is talking – all attention should be on them. So, Macy, Tucker, and Sheree, you may have to cheat just a little – turn in so that it will be easier to look at the speaker without having your back to the audience. Look over your shoulder.
• When the sea mither comes to tell Brigid about the bard’s rod, be surprised that it is so magical and moves.
• STEP ON LINES
• VILLAGE PEOPLE – LOUDER in murmuring.
• EVERYONE, tiptoe . It is way too loud when everyone moves at once.
• Bread basket?
• Louder murmuring during village scene. Make noises either positive or negative when the villagers are insulting Macy. In real life, you would react in some way – usually audible.
• Tucker – when moving to meet Sheree and Macy – just walk with purpose to them. We might change your Seanachai position to be closer.
• Show yourself worthy – use more authority and be distinct – just slow down on that line.
• Point the way – slower
• Macy – Out of this world – both out and world should be stressed.
• Supreme kelpie – we need people noises here – react to her announcement.
• “Now, Now” Seanachai -giggle – react in some way
• Humans are strange – Seanachai -giggle – react in some way
• Well human – Seanachai -laugh- react
• Helpless hopeless human - we need people noises here – react to her announcement.
• Brooke, move if you are being blocked. You can get up and stand in a different place. Move by the Sea Mither. Let her wecome you and put her arm around you.
• Tatum as the horse: 'galloped' in step with Macy a few times and nearly looked as if she were limping along with her. Tatum might make sure they are not on the same 'step' or prance (knees up) a bit more....like pause a beat in between the steps of left-right,slight pause before the next left-right. This is when you first go on your journey. Tatum, prance light a horse – Macy, limp. Then the longer you travel, Tatum, you are not prancing so much.
• GIANT – ONE MISSISSIPPI – We have to rehearse that.
• My father will have to kill you - we need people noises here – react to her announcement
• 7 days old - we need people noises here – react to her announcement
• Jake, when you fall – people noises- grunt – groan – you are an old man. Picture me having a tug of war and falling on my ____.
• Tatum – MORE HORSE NOISES and vary them
• Giant scene – ever again - we need people noises here – react to her announcement - You are happy – yell – clap
• GIANT – ONE MISSISSIPPI – We have to rehearse that.
• Darlin girl - we need people noises here – react to her announcement
• More horse noises.
• STEP ON LINES
• Macy – exaggerate being still – not moving at cue when the serpent enters.
• Hannah as the serpent - but her hands were just hanging. maybe she could do her fingers in a claw-looking hang rather than just a soft-fisted hand.
• From a friend whose criticism I value - Sheree looks to the audience out of the corner of her eye. ...she was great! - just needs to look over our heads rather than looking like she is looking for approval from an audience member. Nathan Caballero did it a couple of times too...but he is very good. :-) If anyone else did it, I didn't notice.
• We need a light on Meredith during the sea serpent scene. She is standing right stage by the bench.
• Destined to do - we need people noises here – react to her announcement
• Ayers, put the wreath on your head before you come in. Just hold the serpent’s mask and hand it to someone downstage. Ayers, don’t cover your face with your hands, it mutes your line – oh my….. Instead you might make a “Jewish” mother gesture and have your hands over your head as if to say – God fix these humans.
• Great job overall – your best performance to date. Remember step on lines and people noises.
• Ms. McLellan, can you bring the DVD back – it might work on my laptop – didn’t think about that. We can watch it at the very beginning at 1PM.
• Next week, I will have you from 11:30-1:30 on Tuesday. We will be in the middle school auditorium.
• Next Sunday , November 28– it is Thanksgiving, but we need the rehearsal. You have never traveled to a place to perform the play, so this is what we will concentrate on – Next Tuesday, November 30, we will rehearse from 3:45-4:45. This will be after your school performance. Thursday, December 2, we will rehearse from 3:45-5:45.
• Friday, December 3, we will leave school at 9AM., rehearse at 10AM, eat lunch at noon and go to the mall. We will return to Shallowater about 4Pm.
• Saturday, December 4, eat a protein breakfast. We will leave the high school (door back at the loading dock) at 10AM. We will have pizza brought to our holding room. I will buy water. The directors’ meeting is at 1PM, and I would appreciate it if two mothers could stay in the room with the kids. We go on at 2PM. The rest of the plays are on the hour, so our kids should be cleaned up and ready for the second play. All students need to wear dress clothes after our performance. Boys, slacks if possible and collared shirts; girls, slacks or dresses. No T shirts. Remember, you are representing Shallowater, Shallowater Middle School, and our theatre department. There are four plays – three in addition to ours. The last play should be over with by 6. I look for critiques to be no later than 8. All students must attend the critiques.
• Because we were about $400. short of funds , I have written a grant and anticipate it will be accepted for $500. We will be working with high school students. A high school student will film and edit Sunday’s performance. Then he will interview our students on bullying and how it feels to be in middle school, how it feels to be accepted/ not accepted. He will edit these interviews – about 15 minutes. We will duplicate these and use them for a presentation at the Service Learning conference in Austin this summer.

Sunday's Rehearsal - Novmeber 14 Public Performance

Critique for November 14, 2010
• Quiet backstage. Judge will kill us if he hears a sound.
• Gray piece cannot be in front of the curtain.
• Before I start with the critiques – Everyone did an amazing job for the first public performance. It flowed smoothly and it was under 40 minutes – yeah. For several of you, it was your best performance. I am excited about competition. But, there were several times that we had pregnant pauses – pauses where nothing was happening. We have to eliminate those. Footsteps were too loud returning to spots. Walk on tiptoe. I am very proud of you – such a great job! Now for the negative parts -
• Choppy lines – Hannah Ayers – Don’t look down – stepping down. Question to audience.
• Jake – Why did you leave- LOUDER
• STEP ON LINES, everyone
• MUST HAVE MUMBLING IN VILLAGE SCENES – ALL PEOPLE ON STAGE WHISPER UNINTELLIGIBLY.
• Shame on you – all point at Macy
• Right stage several seanachais are frozen the same.
• Noise backstage – be careful backstage not to drop things.
• Magic is here – Brooke bigger and louder
• Music needs to be louder on Magic is here.
• Speaking of sound and lights – GREAT JOB! What an improvement! We will start the show at contest the way we did today.
• Almsted, three wishes – cheat (turn ) more toward the audience. Remember regal with authority. BIGGER AND SLOWER The sentence with the three tests must be said deliberately.
• Timers backstage – 11 minutes at the Kelpie part
• Fierce – cannot hear those words – tatum
• Chicken coop needs work - May cut it and have Kayla tear up boards.
• More horse noises – Tatum
• Tatum’s lines before leaving in a trot need to be said before exiting.
• Giant scene – Tatum, Macy, Abbie, and Jake are in a straight line – stagger this.
• Macy, louder and bigger throughout play – emotions were great – just more
• Macy, need to see your idea of a giant father.
• Tucker, keep the lisp on the words.
• Tatum, more horse noises.
• We need a light on Meredith when she is right stage.
• 30 minutes at wee girl
• Are you sure that’s what you want – sure should be stressed.
• Serpent scene – the wing must be clearer.
• Right stage people MUST COME OUT earlier after serpent scene.
• Choppy – never understand – Ayers
• Scoffing – Tucker use gestures.
• Everyone who speaks to different people, make a change in focus, so that the audience knows to whom you are speaking. Macy, use your hands at times (not all the time) to shout up toward the audience – then speak differently to people around you – shout up toward your father.
• A world of wondrous adventures – Meredith, be clearer
• DO NOT MESS WITH CAPES
• Paige, put down cape.

Final Rehearsal Schedule for THIS WEEK ONLY

Please let students know that they will have rehearsal Wednesday from 3:45 -4:30 and on Friday from 3:45-6:00.

Sunday Rehearsal, November 7

Sunday, November 07, 2010 Rehearsal
Thanks for working so hard – doing the dance over and over again.
Ashley’s notes
1. When you move in the background, be mystical, but slow. Don’t attract too much attention.
2. Kelpie, squeal louder.
3. “No harm letting him…” needs to be slower. Don’t say above.
4. Work on changing characters in the middle of a line. The line has to flow – we will ask Ashley about this.
5. Rehearse the giant step scene. Jumping needs to be right with the footsteps.
6. Rest a while with us – let the audience see Macy say or nod no before the next line.
7. Talk louder during serpent scene.
8. Don’t chop – How-you saw=-yourself- before- you began- your journey.
9. Jake – strength – work on enunciating this word – sounds like straight.
Molly’s notes
10. No talking backstage or in the light booth.
11. Seanachai - It is hard to tell the difference between inside Brigid’s head with the narration.
12. Lights and sound must fade in and out. Fix it.
13. Seanachai – bigger arm movements.
Couch’s notes
14. Lights an music must fade in and out. It is a blaring problem that is evident when the show opens.
15. Jake, look at Macy with your first line.
16. Tatum – messing with hair and cape
17. Be sure that you pull hats or caps off your forehead so that we can see your faces.
18. Brooke – don’t mess with your costume. When you say “ugly” stand.
19. Nathan – louder especially your first line.
20. Tatum – messing with hair and cape
21. Jake and Paige – don’t move quickly in the background..
22. We have to fix the book. It is too floppy.
23. Brooke and Tatum – dance with your first meeting with Macy.
24. Sea Mither – work on dancing around Macy. Don’t be in front of her when Macy is talking.
25. Parker, Lights must fade in and out.
26. Jake step on line – Magic is here.
27. Tucker – great job on Hope
28. Sage do not run at any time. You are majestic and regal.
29. We need to see Tucker laughing during the Kelpie scene.
30. Everyone – react to the Kelpie
31. Page – stand up with the lines – leave her forget her.
32. Macy – good job looking afraid of the kelpie and looking sad.
33. Brooke – don’t let Macy and Tatum block you – move.
34. Music for the giant needs to start as soon as Abby says her last line.
35. Chicken coop part needs work. Chickens need to be quieter.
36. No harm letting – SLOW DOWN, Abby
37. CENTER STAGE with the giant business – you all are too far right stage.
38. Macy, use the upstage hand to gesture to the giant.
39. Stomping and jumping need to be coordinated.
40. Reagan – don’t mess with your cape.
41. Kelpie – you want that wish answered….. Reagan on the floor,.- after you have looked at Macy’s foot.
42. Paige you are doing a good job taking the teeth offstage, but it is still too obvious. They need to be removed during the dance.
43. Reagan, you have a habit of facing backstage.
44. 3rd test – Sea Mither – remember how we rehearsed it last rehearsal.
45. Be gone, not so mean – Brooke.
46. Reagan – after serpent – walk normally.
47. During this scene – NO ONE IS RIGHT STAGE. Where are you? Tatum you should already be out there as well as Jake and Abby.
48. Sheree – cut what might this be.
49. We were over – 40 min 11 seconds. This is the first time. You were really dragging.
50. We need to find one more day to rehearse. If everyone can get over on Wed, right after school – 3:45, we can be through by 4:30.
51. With the time change, I didn’t think it would be a good idea to rehearse 30 more minutes. The kids were tired.
